How do I adjust the tension on a Stanley self-closing spring hinge (the one with Phillips screw on top)?
The self-closing spring hinge I have has a Phillips head screw on the top of the barrel and a raised arrow going clockwise around the screw.
I need to know how to reduce and increase tension of these spring hinges (usually used for fire doors)
Nothing on the Stanley website mentions how to adjust these spring hinges.
The model mentioned is adjusted, according to the Stanley website, using an Allen wrench/key. The model does not have a series of holes
It mentions a "ratchet" design
Stanley hinges have smooth barrels with Phillips screw at the top. Other hinge types have pins in the barrel.
To adjust spring tension on Stanley hinges, remove the Phillips screw. Then using an Allen wrench tighten the spring by turning towards the arrow on the hinge. DO NOT turn the Allen wrench in opposite
direction of the arrow.
To loosen the hinge, place a bolt or other straight metal pin (NOT THE ALLEN WRENCH) in the slot and gently tap with a hammer until tension is released. The reason for not using the allen wrench to release tension is because when the tension is released, the allen wrench will whip around very quickly (because of the high tension) and the protuding part of the wrench will slam into your door scratching or possibly denting it.
