The first step is to establish what the customer wants. With sketches and pictures, we reach a final approved design. We've had customers walk in with pictures of Tiffany rings, Tacori and others and wanted to combine aspects of each style to create one new unique piece. The possibilities are endless!
The second step is designing the piece. What was once done entirely by hand can now be done by CAD (computer aided design) technology. We take the approved hand drawn design with all it specifications such as (finger size, millimeter width of the shank, the depth of the gallery, the prong size and height etc....) and build the 3D design on the latest jewelry software in the industry. The benefit of the software is that we're able to show the customer his piece before it's completed.
Then we send the computer file to a carving machine which builds the ring in wax, layer by layer until the full piece is complete. (before computers, a wax carver did all the work by hand) but with computer generated wax, you can obtain greater details and sharper finishes. This wax is used to create a negative mold of the ring, and the negative mold is then used to cast the metal in (white gold, yellow gold, platinum). The piece is now ready for setting. Diamonds or color stones are carefully chosen to meet the right size, quality and color and set in the ring. There are different types of settings and often jewelers will specialize in one or the other. ( a future article will deal with these setting types ). Once the stones are set, the ring is dipped into a special chemical if it is to be white gold, without this rhodium plating, white gold will have a slight yellowish tint. If it's yellow gold or platinum, it will not require the plating and will right away be taken to its final step, an expert hand polished to a perfect shine, ready to wear.
When customers see the final piece finished, they are mesmerized by it, after seeing it through the entire process, they feel a stronger appreciation for their unique piece. A custom design jewelry always turns into an heirloom. Why buy brand names when you can claim your own name on your own creation (with the help from skilled jewelers).
