Remington 550 value pack ammo likes to jam in my Mossberg 702 22LR...?
The CCI Mini-Mags never seem to jam ever. But whenever I buy those 550 round value packs I have a jam every 10 rounds. Is the 550 round pack a lower quality or is my gun picky?
So, the CCI stuff is generally better quality than most for range ammo, but it is more the case that .22LR semi autos are notoriously picky about ammo, doesn't matter whether they are rifles or pistols. Further, any more there is a lot of variety in .22 LR ammo design. Subsonic, hypervelocity, copper jacketed, lubed lead, light bullet weight (30 grain), super heavy bullet weight (60 grain) which further stresses a semi auto rifle in trying to run them smoothly. From a quality standpoint duds are more a measure than anything else.
In fact, most ammunition companies sell bulk packs, and some sell several different types of .22 ammo in them. In fact, in my inventory right now I a Winchester 555 bulk pack High Velocity copper jacket 36 grain, a 500 round bulk pack of Wildcat standard velocity 40 grain lubed leaded, and a 500 pack of Dynapoint standard velocity - and I have no idea what those bullets look like. All of those are just from Winchester. All were $20 or less for the bulk pack so I got them to try.
My dad's .22? Loves the Federal Champion 38 grain copper jacketed high velocity 525 bulk pack. Hates the Remington Thunderbolt 40 grain high velocity. No clue why.
My friend's 10/22? Loves Amscor high velocity 36 grain copper jacketed, hates the Aguila high velocity 40 grain lubed lead. Why? who knows.
All four shoot great in my Beretta 89 pistol, only 2 of them (Federal and the Thunderbolt) shoot well in my Beretta 87 pistol.
The Mossberg 702 is a pretty reputable .22, I've never shot one personally, but I've never heard of them being an unusually picky .22. Higher grade .22 rifles can actually be MORE picky, because they are trying to tune in a certain level of performance which can make them less tolerant to variation.
So, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'd consider cleaning your rifle just to make sure that doesn't have something to do with it, but then just note down that it isn't a good match and buy something else. If you've got friends who are .22 shooters work a trade or sell it to them. It's a normal thing to run into.
