Help With My Wind Turnbine(windmill) please?? (awarding 5 stars)?
I am making a small wind turbine(also known as a windmill) for my schools science fair this is, I have an idea for its design, but i need the basic info. about it first. I need to know the basic componants if possible, and how to build a small one, with about enough electricity to power a lamp or two. If its not to much to ask I would like to know (as basic as possible) how it converts it into electricity. Thanks in advance. All answers are apreciated
Okay, so here's some information.
[Almost] any electric motor can be used as a generator. To use the motor, you apply a current to the terminals which causes the shaft to turn.
To make a generator, turn the shaft, and a current comes out of the terminals.
Now, how big do you really want this to be? If you're planning on running one or two conventional lamps, remember that each lamp runs on 120 volts at about half an amp or so, so it is a lot of power (you need a lot of wind!).
What I would suggest, for a science fair, is making a smaller wind turbine that could be powered by the wind from a box fan, and then have a poster showing larger units.
So, you need a small electric motor. You need small fan props that fit onto the motor shaft. If you want to be fancy, you can buy a motor from RadioShack or Fry's (depending on where you live), and maybe hand craft a fan prop to fit on the shaft.
What I would do, is to buy one of those little handheld fans that look like this:

Take it apart, so all you have are the wires going to the motor, and the fan blades. Then you can mount those on a stand you make to look like the pictures of the big turbines in your poster.
Hook up a small light bulb, like one from a flashlight, or an LED, and it should glow if you turn the fan props fast enough.
If you're really set on making a turbine that powers household light bulbs, I would take apart a box fan and start with that.
