Hi all, Is a top grade 1080p upgrade DVD player ie: Denon DVD1940 as good as a Blueray Player at play back?
Nope. upconverting DVD players can only interpolate to add pixels to fit the resolution you set (720p, 1080p/i). You aren't actually adding any new information by doing this, so the picture can only be marginally better.
A BlueRay or HD-DVD player can output up to 1080p, and the source material actually has 1080p content on it, unlike a standard DVD that is 480i.
The HD-DVD and BlueRay players will upconvert as well. I bought one of the $98 Toshiba HD-DVD players from WalMart this last week and it does a good job of upscaling, but HD is gorgeous. I'd expect the same result on a BlueRay.
