Does anyone know where I can get my dog's teeth cleaned cheaply?
I adopted a 3 year old, 70lb Lab Mix with some major tartar on the teeth. I've been using ALL possible economical tools (i.e. buying Pedigree Dentastix on sale, brushing with a 3-sided toothbrush with enzymatic toothpaste at least 3x a week, which is a VERY daunting task). Tartar has reduced dramatically, but there are still some tartar near the gum line, and I think a dental cleaning may be necessary, I'm trying to keeps costs low, because I would like to save up in case an emergency occurs. Any tips on where I can go about getting a dental cleaning done, cost effectively? I've been quoted above $300 at a vet near me. I live in Queens, New York City, and willing to to other boroughs, and Long Island. Thanks guys, really appreciate any input : )
Check with local trainers. Here in Vancouver, WA, there is a gal that will take as long as necessary to gain the dogs trust and will actually very gently scale a dog's teeth without anesthesia. It's impressive to watch. If you are lucky enough to find someone with this skill, be sure to get plenty of references. You don't want someone who is anything less than an expert and preferably a veterinarian or vet tech.
Discounts or not, taking your dog to the vet to have the teeth cleaned is darned expensive. In excess of $200 most places. I've had it done when my dog was on the table for other surgeries which reduces the cost of anesthesia which is substantial. I do recommend training your dog to the tooth brush but don't use human tooth paste. There are things that can be toxic to dogs in them and the mint flavor usually burns their mouthes (although I have a female pit that just loves the taste).
