When surgeons are cleaning their medical equipment, it's important to use the correct cleaning brush. For example, If the brushes circumference is to large than it may not clean correctly.
The manufacturing of cleaning brushes for surgical instruments has also come a long way over the decades. Many brushes are known as wire twisted, whereby two separate strands of wire are tied together to hold the nylon bristles in place. Over the years, galvanized steel was made to make this wire, which easily rusted and limited the life of the brush. These brushes are made with a combination of stainless steel wire and medical grade nylon. The latest progress in brush technology is the use of antimicrobial nylon bristles which together with stainless steel wire, extends the life of the brush.
For medical equipment to be properly cleaned, it is necessary that the brushes distal tip is cleaned. If we fail to use a brush long enough to exit completely, we will simply push the dirt to the spot where we stop. So remember, the brush must always exit completely when cleaning your surgical instruments.
The ability to clean a medical instrument is now the main focus when creating manufacturing surgical instruments many changes have happened. This change has vastly improved the way the medical instruments are assembled and disassembled, which makes them more cleanable. 2 good examples of this are Kerrison Laminectomy Rongeurs & laparoscopic instrumentation. Laparoscopic instruments have been used for decades, but during that time manufacturing methods have changed that now allow laparoscopic instruments to be completely disassembled. Using a cleaning brush after the surgical instrument has been disassembled, it can now be cleaned.
