Can dental retainers rust?
By right it shouldn't, but mine looks oxidized at the sides and it has the metallic taste (ugh). I stopped wearing immediately and called for an appointment with my dentist.
Could he charge me for a new retainer?

it's not supposed to rust. they should be made from a metal that will not oxidised, seeing as it is in a mosit warm environment!
But you did the right thing by taking it out and going to see the dentist.
S/he should replace it for you, and ask them which metal it is made from. It may be an alloy so that it is stronger, but just check that the metals in the alloy dont rust.
Make sure you are cleaning it thoroughly so that plaque acid isn't eroding it away.. and try to lay off fizzy things to stop erosion
