Respirator Dust

Is not wearing a respirator in shop class breaking any rules?
We work with a lot of sanding equipment in my shop class and we constantly breath in all the dust in the air.My mother said that it is possibly in violation of the OSHA safety regulations.I just want to know if it really is.
You should be wearing a dust mask, but not a respirator which takes special training and a medical exam. However, OSHA has nothing to do with it. OSHA does not cover students. You are more likely covered by Dept of Education rules in your state, but they would be similar to OSHA. Talk to your shop teacher. They have probably determined the level of dust is not sufficient for added protection.
