How does a space shuttle reach the space?
Okay, so let's start when the Shuttle is on the pad.
First, when the countdown is at T- 6.6 seconds (6.6 seconds to launch), all of the main engines ignite .2 seconds apart. Then, after the main engines are at 104.5% of thrust (the engines have been cleared to operate up to 9% higher than initially thought, although they limit this to 4.5% over, and reserve 100% thrust for emergencies, like engine-out scenarios), the SRBs ignite at T- .3 seconds. The shuttle then rises off the pad at T-0.
The shuttle rises upward, and around T+60 (60 seconds after launch), the Shuttle encounters what's called Max Q, where the aerodynamic forces acting on the Shuttle are at their highest. At this point, the main engines throttle down to reduce stress on the Shuttle stack. Once the intense aerodynamic forces begin to subside, and the shuttle exits the period of Max Q, the engines throttle up again (this happens to be the moment where Challenger was lost).
Still going, the Shuttle begins to slowly "tip" over, from going vertically to going horizontally. This happens so that the Shuttle can gain enough "tangential velocity," velocity parallel to Earth's surface.
At T+124, the Shuttle's SRBs have done their job of getting the Shuttle off the pad and to an altitude of about 45km. The SRBs rise up on their ballistic trajectory to an altitude of about 60km, and then fall down, deploying sets of parachutes which allow them to splash down in the ocean safely, and be recovered for reuse.
Now, the Shuttle's 3 main engines are the only thing pushing the Shuttle forward into orbit. After about 8 minutes, it's time for MECO (main engine cutoff). At this point, the shuttle's engines cut off, and 10 seconds later, the external tank separates to reenter Earth's atmosphere and splashdown in the Atlantic.
Now it's time for the possible OMS-1 burn of the Shuttle's OME (orbital maneuvering engines). OMS-1 is conducted if the Shuttle's MECO did not occur properly, and a correction is needed.
Afterward, the shuttle coasts up to its apogee (highest point in its trajectory). Right now, the Shuttle is not yet in orbit. Its perigee (lowest point) is still in Earth's atmosphere, which would cause the Shuttle to come back down. So at apogee, it must fire its engines for the OMS-2 burn, to bring it to more circular orbit.
And now, the Shuttle is in orbit.
