Considered as one of the greatest figures in Bangla cinema, Satyajit Ray hailed from a family inclined in the arts. His father was a Bangla writer and poet, while his grandfather was a writer of children's stories.
It was during his stint as a designer of book covers that the seeds of being a filmmaker were planted. He was especially influenced by the classic Bangla novel Pather Panchali while working on the illustrations and cover of the children's version of the book. The desire to pursue film blossomed when he was sent to London where it was said that he watched a hundred films in three months.
He based his first film on Pather Panchali, using the same title. Despite initial difficulties, it won an award in the Cannes Film Festival, cementing his reputation as a filmmaker. He followed this up with two more films on the same story, Aparajito and Apur Sansar. Together, these were later on known as "The Apu Trilogy".
His other notable works are Devi, Kanchencjanha, Charulata, Gyne Bagha Byne, and the Calcutta Trilogy (Pratidwandi, Jana Aranya and Simabaddha).
Even most of his films were mostly Bangla natok, they had universal appeal due to the issues they tackle - coming of age, ambition, love, poverty, idealism, and disillusionment. His films were widely received not just in India but throughout the world as well.
In fact, his script for a movie called "The Alien" is rumored to have influenced Stephen Spielberg's ET, which the Hollywood director denies. Other notable directors who have been influenced by Ray are Martin Scorses, Isao Takahata, Jean-Luc Godard, and Danny Boyle. There are a lot of references to his works in recent films such as Forty Shades of Blue, My Family, and Sacred Evil. His influence even extends to the animated series The Simpsons where the character Apu Nahasapeemapetilon was named in homage to his protagonist in The Apu Trilogy.
