Leaning a bicycle against a wall is a less than ideal way to store it. The design of the bicycle - with the protruding handlebars - makes it unfortunately very easy to knock ever even when you think it is securely lent against something such as a wall or post. If you want to safely store your bike to prevent it becoming damaged you really need to have some form of purposeful storage. With a purpose designed bike rack not only will your bike not get damages it may also prevent passers by becoming injured to.
Wall mounted rack, ceiling mounted solutions and bicycle sheds are the most common types of storage, my personal favoured is the bicycle shed. It has to be noted though that not every one has the luxury of the space needed to have a shed specifically for you bike. People that live in flats for example; will have no outdoor storage space at all - so this solution is completely unfeasible. If this is your situation then I would really recommend a wall mounted bicycle storage solution.
Wall mounted bicycle racks are cost effective, easy to install and more importantly are quick and easy to use. There are predominantly two types of wall mounted bike rack - the sort that has arms that the top tube of your bicycle frame sit on and the sort where the bike is hung by the front wheel. My personal preference is the arm type - there seems little advantage to me in hanging your bike from the front wheel because it will stick out in to the room further and will be easier to knock off.
The type of wall mounted bicycle rack that has arms is very flexible and you can decide what height you would like to mount the bike rack at. If for example the area that you store your bike in sees and lot of traffic it may be better to mount the bike rack at above head height, so that the bike is stored completely out of the way of passers by. If the rack is going in the garage though and not many people walk by putting the rack at waist height - so that the wheels are just off the ground - will be sufficient. Some wall racks are even sturdy enough to act as a maintenance stand if you like the idea your bike rack having a duel purpose then you should mount the top of the arms at eye level. This will put your bicycle at a good height from working on, without having to bend over and straining your back.
