I recently had retainers fitted after having my braces off; a clear plastic one on top, and a fixed wire glued to the back of my bottom teeth.
I don't mind the clear one at all; it's really comfortable, but I HATE the wire. I don't know where to put my tongue it's so uncomfortable, and the tip of my tongue is so sore. Plus, the wire is only glued to my front six teeth, so I can't see how that is at all helpful.
Please could someone who's had a similar experience, or an orthodontist/dentist would be even better, tell me which is more effective, and also how long the fixed retainer would have to be in for? I can't stand the idea of having it in for the rest of my life.
The fixed retainer is there for as long as your orthodontist
thinks is necessary. They are used to help keep the
lower teeth from relapsing and going back to being crowded.

The wire shouldn't be causing you any problems, see your
orthodontist about it. Maybe there's some leftover cement
that's rough and causing soreness. Some orthodontists leave
the retainer in there indefinitely, some only leave it in until
you get your wisdom teeth out. Some put it on there in
cases where the patient wasn't very cooperative, so they
think if they gave them the chance to wear a removable
one, the patient wouldn't wear it, so the fixed one is put in
so the patient has no choice but to wear it. A lot of the
orthodontists I know ask the patients' parent which one they
want to use, based on how cooperative the patient is or isn't.
