18 weeks and dental x-raay?
i had a toothache and went to the dentist he said i have to have a root canal and needed to take an x-ray to see how close it was to the root to see if i can get away with it. it was a digital x-ray, i had the led vest on and he said it was ok. i'm kind of worried cause i couldnt get a hold of my ob to ask her and my baby book says absolutly no x-rays, IS MY BABY OK SHOULD I GO AND CHECK?, IS IT SAFE TO HAVE A ROOT CANAL DONE OR SHOULD I WAIT. please help
If you need a root canal, then the very small risk is well worth it. Dental x-ray machines do not emit significant radiation very far from the tube (the part of the machine where the x-rays come out). Most of the x-rays have totally dissipated by the time you are more than 6-10 inches away from the tube. And dental x-rays require a lot less radiation than an abdominal or chest x-ray. Even the amount of radiation in one or two chest x-rays is very very unlikely to cause any problems with the baby. I work in a vet clinic where they have x-ray and while I was pregnant I accidentally walked right into the room just as they were taking an x-ray, no protection or anything. I also took several x-rays very early in my pregnancy before I found out. My son is perfectly fine.
Dental work, including root canals, are safe during the first two trimesters. Not getting a needed root canal done would actually be more harmful to your baby because infected teeth release bacteria into your blood stream which can travel to other organs and cause infection.
