Teeth can be damaged by fracturing, chipping, decaying, and cracking. The damage must be evaluated right away or it will get worse. Tooth loss occurs everyday due to procrastination. Many of these conditions are silent problems that are not painful. Pain gives the dental patient motivation to get their problem fixed. Even if the problem is not causing pain, it must be evaluated and treated promptly. If pain does occur, it is best to see an Emergency Dentist.
Tooth Anatomy
Teeth have multiple layers of tissue. The outer layer, the enamel, is the hardest. The enamel protective layer is what is used to crush up food. When the outer layer is violated, the next layer, the dentin is exposed. This softer layer of dentin is much more vulnerable to acids, and will decay at a higher rate. This layer has microscopic tube like pathways that will transfer a temperature response to the nerve. When the second layer is exposed, the tooth is much more prone to being sensitive. The inner most layer of the tooth is where the nerve and blood vessels live. If this are gets exposed by a fracture or by decay, then a root canal is the best option of repair.
Cracked teeth
When something very hard gets placed in the mouth and it is chewed on, a crack may occur in a tooth. The way that the dentist determines if a crack exists is by finding out that when biting in a certain area, upon release pain occurs. After this gets confirmed several times, a crown is then recommended to repair the tooth. If the crack just recently occurred, then there is a good chance that a root canal is not needed. If the testing shows that the nerve in the tooth has been damaged also along with the crack, then a root canal is also needed. After several months there is still a chance that the nerve in the tooth can still die and a root canal would then be needed.
Cracked Tooth Syndrome.
When you go to the dentist and have a tooth evaluated that hurts when you bite down on it, you may get a diagnosis of cracked tooth syndrome. This syndrome is when trauma occurs and the tooth has a crack that causes symptoms of pressure equals pain. The tooth may or may not be cold sensitive. The pain may only be present when the tooth gets pressure applied to it at a certain angle at meal times. The pain is sharp and it shoots through your jaw. It does not last very long. A cracked tooth with this problem does not show up on an x-ray so other methods are needed in order to diagnose this problem. It is important to treat this problem early on with a crown because the nerve can easily die and a root canal will then be needed along with a crown.
Benign Cracks and Chipped Teeth
Many dentists will crown a tooth if it shows the slightest sign of a crack. When a crack is visible, it is acceptable to watch this tooth if there are no symptoms. If and when a tooth like this shows some signs of discomfort, it is then time to reevaluate this tooth for a crown. If a tooth gets chipped from a traumatic force then it is wise to have a dentist evaluate it for treatment because the outer protection of the tooth has been violated. If a filling is placed soon after the chip occurs then the correct protection to the outer layer of the tooth can be restored and cavity prevention can be at its best.
Tooth Decay
Tooth decay for the most part is a silent problem at first just like any disease process in the body. At its earlier stages the cavity does not cause any pain. Only after the cavity gets into the second layer of the tooth will you start to feel discomfort. When decay travels in to the tooth, it can cause a soft inner tooth structure situation where the outer tooth still may be present except for the small hole where the cavity started. After this occurs, the tooth can then have its outer shell fracture and expose the large decayed area that exists. All of the above issues can be best diagnosed by an Emergency Family Dentist.
