Sept.14 2004 i was in volved in a high speed truck van accident. The driver of the van perished, it was a trajic day in my life one that i have not quite got over yet. Needlees to say i had 2 broken discs in my cervical spine, C-6 and C7 and 1 broken disc in my thoracic spine, T-3. Numerous contusions, was knocked unconsious and developed short term memory loss and a left arm and left shoulder that is only 40% what it used to be. I have had three opinions from Drs. in there proven fields all saying i need surgery on my neck, from caging the vertabre to fusing them. I have opted for non surgical procedures, manipulation under anesthesia, and other procedures but i am finding none to be helping in the least. I have a range of motion from left to right of 7 and 15 degrees respectively and abduction of less than 5 percent. The thing is i still have limited motion, what happens when i have surgery?, will i have no motion at all or will i gain more than i have now?. I need your input.
A fusion will absolutely limit your range of motion but it will also very likely reduce your pain. Often the reason for undergoing surgical procedures of the spine is not to increase function but to prevent further degeneration.
