How do I control pain due to nerve damage in my foot & ankle because of a compound fracture. I have 2 rods,?
plate and 18 screws in my ankle. It hurts to walk. This accident happened a year ago. Will the pain go away?
You could be having continued pain for a couple of reasons besides nerve pain. The first likely reason is traumatic arthritis in your ankle joint. This usually starts at about 1 year from the injury. You can get a cortisone injection into the joint that usually provides some relief.
The other thing is that the hardware itself often generates the pain. This hardware can be removed anytime after about 4 months out from the original surgery. It is a relatively easy procedure to make a small incision and remove the plate and screws. The rod is permanent.
Talk to an orthopedic surgeon about the hardware removal or the injection.
Nerve pain can be helped with physical therapy. In a last case scenerio, there is a surgery that can deaden the nerve. The downside is that you would loose all sensation to that area of your ankle/leg/foot.
