Often the labels we give ourselves in life become the self-limiting beliefs that keep us from achieving success in all we do. "I'm an average golfer", "I don't know much about computers", "I've always had a temper", or "I'm not really good at root canals".
Whether we're on the golf course or in our dental practice, these self-defeating labels can begin to dictate how we view our abilities and ourselves. What's going to happen when the golfer that says, "I'm not good at six foot putts", is standing about six feet away from the cup? As people start to internalize and believe in these self-defeating statements, they place limits on their abilities and possibilities of success.
How do you progress from the self-image of "I'm not really good at root canals" to "I'm getting better at root canals"? First, you must recognize your own self-talk, especially that which is negative, and eliminate self-defeating words and phrases that define your character, skills, or abilities.
Second, you must replace those self-defeating labels with ones that have a more positive tone. Instead of saying, "I'm not really good at root canals", get out an old textbook, read some new articles, buy an apex locator, or take a hands-on course in endodontics, and start saying "I'm feeling more comfortable with root canals, and I'm getting better everyday".
Third, you've got to start doing some root canals. Start with the easy cases and work your way up to more difficult ones.
People with a self-defeating vocabulary are setting themselves up to fail. You must eliminate negative words and replace them with words of encouragement and accomplishment. Acknowledge what you do well on each and every patient. Look at your final radiographs and show them to your patients and staff-get excited about that nice fill. Forget about the ones that aren't perfect, you gave them your best effort-now move on.
It's OK to be short or to break a file once in a while because no one's perfect, not even endodontists. Don't be self-critical and focus on things that go wrong. Examine your weaknesses objectively to help you improve as a dentist, not as a way to scold yourself and ruin self-confidence.
