Living on college campus with a disability?
I use a wheelchair, and currently I live in a dorm on my campus on the second floor. I hate having to rely on elevators, which are not always fully functional. The elevators are disabled when the fire alarms go off, and they've told me to just lock myself in my room and wait for help if there would be an emergency.
I don't think it would be unreasonable to request being placed in a dorm where I had a room on the first floor, however, the only dorms where this would be possible are for juniors and seniors only, and I'm a freshman. Would it be reasonable for me to request this even though it would be bending the rules for freshmen? I don't want to make this seem like I'm trying to get junior/senior privileges, it would just be more convenient for me to be on the first floor. Are there any ADA regulations to back this up? Any advice would be appreciated.
This is not an unusual request at all. If you haven't asked them already, then just do so. Don't worry about them assuming you're asking for something you're not (upper class privileges). If you cite your safety concerns as the main reason then that is completely valid. I imagine it's also easier for you to be more independent (carrying groceries, books, etc) without having to use an elevator all the time. You probably don't have to cite any ADA regulations.
