10 points! Canon Rebel XS Anyone know anything about the lenses?
I'M looking at getting a canon Digital Rebel XS or XTI One camera comes with a EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 LENS in the sealed box Kit and Im not sure if its a image Stabilization (IS) and the other camera comes with a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM SLR Lens. I think the USM is older but which one one is better? the IS or ultrasonic motor one? also the seller doesnt know if the first one (in the sealed box) is in fact an IS lens all he said was it says EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 LENS on the box. Does this camera model come with an IS and Non IS lens? any info is helpful thanks! also is the camera a good prof model?
The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 is a low-end budget lens (complete with plastic lens mount) and has been released in three different versions (four, if you count the USM version).
The first version, the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 was included as a kit with Canon's very first dSLR, the EOS 300D (EOS Digital Rebel 300D).
The second version, the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II was available with the next camera in line, the EOS 350D (EOS Digital Rebel XT) and then the EOS 400D (EOS Digital Rebel XTi).
The latest version, the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is available in a kit with the 450D (EOS Digital Rebel XSi) and the EOS 1000D (EOS Digital Rebel XS). This new version with IS is obviously the better version (still low-end, but better).
If you particularly want the IS lens, then you need to look at either the XS or the slightly better XSi, but the XTi would also make a great first dSLR (as long as you could get it with the IS kit lens). So, when buying your dSLR and lens, just make sure the lens has IS at the end of it's description.
As a side note...there was a USM version of this lens that was only available as a kit with the EOS 20D (released in 2004) so you could now probably only get it used, so it's not worth worrying about because it's still a crappy lens. The new IS version and it's auto focus system, apparantly works fairly well, so it would be the one to get. Just don't expect good manual focusing though, because it doesn't have a dedicated manual focus ring which makes focusing manually, difficult.
If you want USM, which also allows FTM (Full Time Manual Focusing) you will find it on Canon's better lenses.
