Clean teeth would automatically provide you good oral hygiene. Brushing your teeth twice a day using suitable toothpaste and a tooth brush can help you to keep your teeth in good condition. But at times this too would not provide effective results as the tooth brush would not reach all your teeth. This leads to build up of plaque and then bacteria growth. Without notice it will cause decay when the bacteria are turned to acids. Plaque will eventually turn into calculus or tartar and would make it difficult to be removed. Daily brushing would not help at this stage.
In this instance you will have to visit a hygienist. The calculus or tartar will be scaled and the teeth will be polished by them. Regular visits to the hygienist can also help prevent tooth decay, gum diseases and cavities. Generally your hygienist would use an electric scaler and to finish the cleaning will use a hand scaler to reach all teeth. Polishing involves a rotating brush with a soft rubber cup and gritty toothpaste run through your teeth.
Clean teeth can prevent you from gum diseases and oral cancer. Using an electric tooth brush can also effectively clean your teeth. Brushing would not remove all the food debris in between your teeth. You will have to use Dental Floss or Inter-dental Brushes. It is reported that 80% of the cavities occur in grooves or pits and fissure of the chewing surface of your teeth. You can also use tooth picks to remove any food debris between your teeth. Oral irrigators and other devices can be used as well.
Scrubbing your teeth is another method to keep them clean. In this case a twig is used instead of a toothbrush. The sap in these twigs replaces the toothpaste and apparently has an antiseptic effect when used for cleaning teeth.
Depending on the condition of your teeth you might have to get a deep teeth cleaning done. The overall health of your teeth would be examined to pickup potential problem areas. This is done using highest quality equipment which can only be used by a trained professional. Your mouth would be rinsed with a special solution and under local anaesthetic plaque and tartar would be scaled. The rough spots on the root will be smoothed which is known as plan to remove bacteria and provide a clean for the gums.
Laser technology is also used to remove tartar or calculus found deep under the gum line which is not reachable by the hygienist using a scaler. You will be anaesthetised before this procedure. The laser would break up the tartar and will be flushed out. This will help the gums to heal more effectively.
Many teeth cleaning products are now readily available in the market ranging from general tooth brushes, electric tooth brushes, toothpastes and flavoured pumice powders. But it is always safe to have a regular visit to the dentists which will ensure you are free from gum disease and possible oral cancer.
