It's just a fact of human nature - dentists scare the heck out of us. Most of us know that all they're going to do is a little cleaning and maybe some scratching, and the whole thing will be over in 20 minutes. But it's tough to get yourself to make the appointment. Here are some reasons why we're afraid of dentists, and some things you can do to get over your dentist-phobia.
Fear Of Finding Something Bad
Dentists poke around in your mouth and the huge thing that lots of us are afraid of is that they'll find something bad! This could mean a lecture on taking better care of ourselves. It could also mean further appointments - and even painful operations like a root canal! The best way to avoid these problems is to keep your head in the sand. Even though it hurts when you chew and your gums are bleeding, you'd just rather not deal with it.
Actually, this is the number one reason you should see the dentist. Bad things could be happening in there and you wouldn't even know it. They can catch something like gum disease before it gets bad. Routine maintenance and cleaning is probably the most important help you get at the dental clinic. So, don't be afraid. Your next visit just may save your teeth.
Fear Of Pain
Here is one of the simplest fears that all animals have - the fear of terrible pain. Dental procedures are known for being especially painful, and this is one of the things that make dentists unpopular with people. But just think back for a minute to your last visit. Did they do anything painful to you? Tooth scratching is uncomfortable (kind of like nails on a chalkboard) and it's tough to keep your mouth open so long. This is another thing that's simply uncomfortable: Having another human being's hands inside your mouth. It's just not natural and nobody likes it. However, as we mentioned before, they're sticking their hands in there for a reason. It's to keep your teeth healthy and make sure there aren't any problems. The dentist is one individual who you can let mess around in there.
Fear Of The Drill
Then, there's that horrible sound we all associate with dental care: the drill. There's just something terrifying about it, especially when it's creeping closer to your teeth. Just keep in mind that the drill isn't going to bore into anything. It's just going to do some deep cleaning in some hard-to-reach places. Close your eyes and try to focus on the soothing music they're piping in through the speakers.
Here is one sure-fire way to get you back to the dentists: pick up the phone, call them and make an appointment. Write it down on your calendar. As the day approaches, imagine that it's a trip to Disneyland or somewhere else without drills and tooth-scratching. Then on the day of the appointment, force yourself to go. Once you walk into the clinic and you're greeted by friendly, smiling staff, you'll start to feel better knowing that you'll be done in just a little while.
