Dental Bearings
There are two basic types of dental ball bearings. The type of ball bearing that your dental tools use depends on the type of work that the tool is designed for. The first type of ball bearing is the Radial Ball Bearing and the second type is the Thrust Ball Bearing.
The Radial Ball Bearing is one of the two dental ball bearings available. It is designed for working in deep grooves and for attacking dental surfaces at an angle. Tools that use these types of ball bearings will typically be tethered to their base surfaces. The design of a Radial Ball Bearing includes an inner ring, an outer ring, a series of balls and possibly even a cage to contain the balls.
The second type of dental ball bearing is the Thrust Ball Bearing. This type of bearing is used for thrust loads. The design of this type of bearing can use balls, rollers or needles. In addition to these working surfaces they also typically have a slewing ring and a seating surface. When you are shopping for dental ball bearings you need to make sure that you look at the bore size, the outside diameter and the inner ring diameter.
In addition to coming in a variety of basic designs, ball bearings also can be constructed differently. The first construction type is highlighted by the Conrad bearing. This bearing type is created using offset rings. The second construction type can be illustrated by the slot filled bearing. In the construction of this type of bearing the inner and outer rings are notched and aligned.
