Brush Ups Textured

Can I use a free font in a set of Photoshop brushes, then give the brushes away for free?
I'm about to make a set of Photoshop brushes.
The brushes will consist of (mostly) overlapped ornate, decorative fonts. (all free) A single brush will contain up to 20 different letters from 20 differnt fonts overlapped and distorted, maybe even chopped up. I also plan on making texture adjustments.
Should I be worried about copyright, or does it not matter since it's a different medium (font vs brush)?
Be very careful. The only fonts i have found that are truly 'public domain' are listed in this blog post i found a while back http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2007/11/08/40-excellent-freefonts-for-professional-design/
Otherwise the answer would probably be no. Just contact the fonts author and ask first. Always read terms of use first to avoid trouble later!
