At school I have a task to determine whether dropping a ball bearing in a glucose solution will result in it: A) moving at a constant speed; or B) accelerate as it moves through the solution. I know how to test this, but I am basically asking which answer (either A, B or a combination of both) I should expect from my results and which scientific principle(s) the answer is based on.
To give a slightly fuller response than centretek666:
The ball bearing will begin by accelerating downwards from rest. But as it moves, there will be the pushback from the viscosity of the liquid, and this force increases with speed.
So the ball bearing will very soon reach a speed that is essentially constant. Most likely, it will never actually attain that speed, but just approach it asymptotically.
