What Angle Should the Boat Head Physics Question?
A ferryboat sails between two towns directly opposite each other on a river.
If the boat sails at 15 km/h relative to the water, and if the current flows at 6.3 km/h, at what angle should the boat head?
I made a right triangle with all the measurements and took the inverse cosine of 6.3/15 but it wasn't the correct answer.
The answer is actually 25 (2 sigfigs), I used arcsin(6.3/15) = 24.8 something.
I got 65 degrees first, but that wasn't right either. Thanks for the help though!
the answer is 65 degrees to the shore
ill explain it...
draw two parallel lines horizontally representing the banks of the river
now draw a line perpendicular to both representing the velocity of the boat relative to water
n now draw a diagonal line from the bottom line of the parallel lines to somewhere on the right side that touches the other bank
this is ur displacement
n the horizontal segment on the opposite bank is the current speed
now u want ur displacement to point directly on the opposite shore..perpendicular to it
hence..move the triangle .. tilt it to the left so the line that was diagonal is now perpendicular to the opposite bank
so now the diagonal line to the left is the boats velocity relative to the river
and the perpendicular is the displacement
while the parallel seg ment to the opposite shore is actually the current velocity that was shifted to the left
now solve for theta..that is sin theta = opp/hyp = 6.3/15 n ull get 24.8, now 90-that gives u the angle to the shore..
