Facets or faceted stones are cut and polished to extend the reflection of light within the stone. The first of these gemstones were made as far back as 800 CE and 1000 CE and were wanted to make jewellery because of their glint. Usually the clear stones were used for this reason.
There are 4 factors that establish the value of faceted stones and these are the cut, color, lucidity and carat weight. This is crucial when valuing valuable gems like: diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds.
Cut - this is regard to the placement and shape of the facets. They need to be cut in a way that minimizes the loss of light from the back of the stone and maximises the reflection in the apex of the stone. Gems that are cut too sharply or thinly will let too much light through the base of the stone and this can mean the stone will have a dark center. These are more cost effective than the ones that have more light reflected through them.
Color - is the shade and the color infiltration of the stone. The idyllic color for each type varies and also relies on the client's preference. As an example, Amethyst stones go from a particularly pale lavender to just about black. The most preferable and dear is the medium to deep purple. The color saturation also implies the depth and the consistency of the color in the stone. If it is uneven then these are sometimes cheaper.
Clarity- is the capacity of the stone to send out the light that enters the gem. Defects in the stone will cause the light to deflect that may then result in dark spots. The smaller the defects the more appealing the gem. This isn't such a problem with cabochon cut and tumbled stones as the exclusive natural patterns is what brings interest to the stone.
Carat weight - this measures the weight of the gem. A carat is 1/5th of a gram and there's 100 points to a carat. These differ from each gem type.
Faceted stones are cut and polished over the entire stone in a balanced pattern. The stone is put on a metal dopstick with wax or glue and then placed in a handpiece which will give actual control of positioning. The cutting angle is then changed and rotated. It is then ground, sanded and polished on a rotating lap, water or oil acts as a coolant. When one side is finished a jig is then used to switch the stone onto the opposite side.
The faceting machine uses a motor that revolves the lap, water, a changeable handpiece which has gears and a protractor, also a platform that holds the handpiece assembly. There were many developments of systems that produce new kinds of faceted stones.
